MEIJI PERIOD ARCHER HITS THE TARGET AT HANNAM’S

Hannam’s Auctioneers of Selborne held there final sale of the calendar year, with over 900 lots, three independent online bidding platforms and over 50 bidders in the room, it was sure to be a busy day .

The sale began encouragingly with £1000 being paid for a silk calligraphy panel, a collection of censers sold very well including one consigned from a valuation day in Church Crookham, collected in the 1920s, it sold for £1400 to a Chinese mainland bidder, the top seller of the day was a large Japanese Meiji period bronze archer, although missing an article upon his back, £2000-3000 pre sale estimated was soon exceeded when two specialist dealers locked horns was the piece was finally secured for £10,000.

Oriental works of art again proved popular, a gold and tortoiseshell necklaced made £3600, and another lot consigned via our run of valuation days was an unusual articulated bronze crayfish, although missing parts, it found a Japanese buyer at £1200. Tribal market has been an emerging market for some time and buyers flocked for a rare Aboriginal club, consigned from a local theatrical society, £1100 was paid and the club will be returning to its Native homeland.

Hannam’s have quite a following for clocks, £1900 was paid for an unusual French time desk clock, £4000 for a nautical themed industrial clock and £1900 for an unusual four glass mantel clock. Works of art carved from jade have been highly prized in recent years, £5500 was paid for a rams head libation cup, £2600 for an oval jade box and cover, and £5800 for a jade bi disc with attached roaming kylin. A local vendor was left stunned when she consigned a rare women’s right suffragette Christmas post card, with unusual attached china dolls, an American collector snapped up the rare piece for £420. In a market where ivory seems to have dipped, a collector paid £4000 for a large pair of ivory elephants. A Lovely quality gold chain made £1100 and a diamond ring £1600.

Hannam’s will be increasing their sale total from nine to twelve auctions per calendar year, and will be running a series of valuation days across the South of England, including Rowledge, Churt, Liphook, Petersfield and Bishops Waltham from January to February, please contact the saleroom for further details.
