Hannam’s Auctioneers held there first sale of the calendar year and with uncertainty around the Oriental Market, there are little signs of any depression within the market, the top seller, cautiously estimated with currently regulations, a Chinese carved horn libation cup estimated at £2000-3000, two online bidders battled for the prized piece and eventually the hammer fell for £20,000, selling to a European bidder. English and Continental ceramics sold well with £360 paid for a Meissen coffee pot, £800 for a set of Aynsley fruit painted coffee cups & similarly the same buyer paid £1000 for a pair of Royal Worcester fruit plates, however the true surprise, consigned via a local valuation day, a Chintz tea service by Paragon estimated at £30-50, five telephone lines competed for the unusual set, before an Australian bidder secured the set for £1500. Clocks again sold well, locally consigned was a late 18th century marble and ormolu clock, estimated at £1200-1500, and with considerable damage, a Belgian buyer was eventually successful with a bid off £3200, the same buyer also snapped up an automaton rocking horse clock for £1900 and a miniature lantern clock for £800. A fine ivory and onyx figure of Ferdinand Preiss made £1800 and a bronze my Jules Dalou fetched £600 under the hammer. A few more surprises fell in the Chinese section of the sale, a finely carved bamboo figure of guanyin estimated at £300-500 found a Chinese mainland buyer at £2000 and the same buyer snapped up a smaller bamboo carving for £600, A chinese silver teaset made £1700 and a Japanese bronze in the style of Miyao made £2200. Hannam’s next sale on February 19th will feature a single owner collection of clocks, as well as Silver, Jewellery, Bronzes, Oriental & European works of art.
