GREEK HERO MENELAUS CONQUERS HAMPSHIRE AUCTION ROOM.

Hannam’s Auctioneers in Selborne had a very successful October auction, with an Italian school large bronze of Menelaus supporting the body of Patroclus, during the siege of Troy selling to a phone bidder for £13,000. The stunning bronze group is just one of a number of fantastic items that sold to phone bidders throughout the sale from across the world, casting a shadow over both internet bidders and bidders in the room.

An example of this would be the lovely collection of musical boxes Hannam’s had in their sale. A lovely 19th century Swiss tortoiseshell musical bird box attributed to rochet commanded seven phones and eventually sold for £4,400. And a fine and rare 19th century Swiss musical box by the notable maker Nicole Freres sold for £2,600.

Once again the clock department at Hannam’s auctioneers held their own, with a majority selling to UK bidders as well as abroad. Notable lots from this section include a rare mid-19th century French royal exchange London carriage clock for £3,400, a fine 19th century Sevres bisque porcelain and ormolu figural clock based on Canova’s three graces for £3,000, and a fine 19th century French industrial boiler engine clock c1880 for £5,000. All three of these clocks sold via Hannam’s three online platforms, live auctioneers, the saleroom and invaluable.

The Chinese and Japanese market is still strong with a steady selling rate to buyers throughout the world. The most fun item had to of been a rare 19th century black forest carved hall stand in the form of a standing bearded dwarf holding aloft a tree stump, standing at an impressive 7ft 4ins tall, selling to a telephone bidder for £5,000. Other Oriental items that sold included a fine large 19th century Japanese Meiji period carved Tokyo school ivory okimono for £4,800, a Chinese Qing dynasty carved white jade libation cup for £4,400, and a fine 17th century Chinese blue and white porcelain brush pot for £4,000
