HANNAM’S IN FAIRYLAND

Hannam’s Auctioneers successfully negotiated the current heatwave by completing a 2,600 item three day auction this month. With results spread across all categories, there was enough fascinating antiques to keep all customer interested. The star lot was a George III ebonised bracket clock, by Matthew Dutton of London. Dutton was the son of the eminent clockmaker William Dutton who was apprenticed to George Graham and in partnership with Thomas Mudge. Matthew was apprenticed to his father in 1771 and later worked in partnership with him in Fleet Street, London. He was admitted to the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers’ and in the year 1800 became a clock master. Consigned unexpectedly by a local resident, the wonderful piece sold for £8,000.

The first day saw a wonderful pair of Wedgewood fairyland lustre porcelain vases by Yorkshire designer Daisy Makeig sell for £6,500. We then jumped East as an interesting a beautiful rare 19th century Bavarian black forest bear bench unusually formed with two standing bears holding aloft a bench sold for £2,600. Continuing the journey through Eurasia, an interesting Russian 18ct gold enamel and diamond jade box and cover sold for £3,600 and we finally finished in Japan where many carved Meiji period ivories sold, casting a relief that despite the potential impending ban, the market is still very strong across Europe for Chinese and Japanese carved ivory.

Their new day three auction is now in full swing, with 863 lots (the large majority of items being sold at no reserve) all selling at great value to room and internet bidders. Over 100 items sold for under £15 but the star lot was a lovely large Louis Vuitton trunk, that sold for £3,800.
Hannam’s invite the public to their saleroom in Selborne throughout the week and they also offer free valuations every Monday from 10am till 2pm. Their next Fine Art auction will be 3rd, 4th & 5th September, with viewing starting on 30th August from 10am.
