REGENCY MUSICAL CLOCK STUNS AUCTION
A magnificent Regency musical organ clock by Thwaites & Reed sold at Hannam’s Auctioneers’ May fine art auction for £20,000. The brass mounted mahogany, quarter striking eight day clock, standing at an impressive 235cm was purchased by an internet bidder after bids quickly rose from the original £12,000 estimate. Consigned via a British collector the early 19th century piece gained plenty of interest as soon as Hannam’s listed it on their three online platforms.
On the second day, the Chinese department had another great auction. One notable item that slipped under the radar was a large 19th Century twin handled bronze censer on stand bearing Xuande marks. Estimated at only £100-150, the bids quickly took off with multiple bidders engaging the auctioneers with the item finally stopping at £4,400.
Hannam’s day three auction, containing general wares, paintings and furniture ranging from all estimates from £1 to £1000, has continued to grow throughout the year. Saleroom Manager, Jack Hannam said after the auction, “It is a great opportunity for people to come down to the saleroom and purchase antiques at affordable prices, mainly given that the majority of the items catalogued in our third day are privately consigned and more often sold without a reserve”.
Hannam’s invite the public to their saleroom in Selborne throughout the week and they also offer free valuations every Monday from 10am till 2pm. Their next Fine Art auction will be 18th, 19th & 20th July, with viewing starting on 16th July from 10am, and 5th, 6th & 7th September, with viewing starting on 3rd September from 10am.
