IVORY SALES REMAIN STRONG IN AUCTION

Hannam’s 2,687 item July auction proved a great success for vendors and buyers, with items selling at all ranges from £5 to £18,000. Spread over three days, Hannam’s offer multiple categories for bidders and their vendors with plenty on offer in their auctions every month. With glass, porcelain, ornamentals, silver, gold and jewellery on the first day. Clocks, watches and oriental works of art on the second day, and finally general wares, furniture and rugs on the final day.

Despite the potential impending ban on the sale of ivory in the auction industry, Hannam’s still had strong results in both European and Oriental carvings, with bidders unfazed by any future bans. A very rare large 19th Century Japanese silver Shibayama inlaid cabinet sold for £18,000 and a beautiful art deco German cold painted bronze and ivory figure by Ferdinand Preiss sold for £12,000.

Although that may be great news for the dealers within the industry, local buyers and part time collectors should not be put off by these results as Hannam’s last auction did sell 800 items for £50 or less. This is thanks to the amount of house clearances they consign and growth of the general auction on the final day of auction every month.
