LALIQUE DISH DISCOVERED IN LOCAL STORAGE CONTAINER

An unusual French Lalique glass dish, decorated with two love birds was discovered in an unpaid storage container in Hambledon, just down the road to nearby Auctioneers, Hannam’s, in Selborne. In fantastic condition, the rare dish was put into their three-day fine art auction this month and sold for £4,200 after a modest £150-200 estimate. This just goes to show there are still antiques buried away, unknown and unappreciated. So, don’t forget to check every nook and cranny for those hidden treasures.

Two fantastic items within Hannam’s 3,000 lot sale this month that caught a lot of attention from multiple international bidders were two enormous 19th century north west Persian Bidjar carpets, c1880. These carpets, so large that pre-appointments had to be made to view them in a nearby warehouse, were acquired directly from Skibo Castle, Scotland, formerly owned by Andrew Carnegie the steel tycoon, and reputably recognised as one of the richest men in history.

Director Harry Hannam commented after the sale, “Another monumental auction this month, and it wouldn’t be possible without all the great antiques we have coming through the door constantly. I don’t know where they’re finding them, but we are achieving great results, and the owners are leaving the saleroom happy. To think a 1920’s Lalique dish was sitting in a local storage container down the road, without anyone knowing what it was, is just crazy. It’s definitely worth more people racking their brains to think what else might be in hidden away.”

Hannam’s can assist by providing a comprehensive professional probate valuation of an estate. They can take the worry out of your hands by helping you value an estate and settle the affairs. Their valuers will provide a professional researched detailed report following an appointment to attend the estate. Some insurers may require or recommend that you have a professional valuation document to support any claims for an item, should something unexpected happen and Hannam’s Auctioneers can offer these insurance valuations. Alternatively, you may wish for a formal valuation of items in your home to ensure you apply the correct insurance policy via the right provider.

Throughout the year Hannam’s will be hosting additional one day auctions in between their three-day monthly auctions. These will be available to view the day before and the morning of the sale, and as always, online. The next auctions shall be a one-day auction on the 6th March and then a three-day auction on the 8th, 9th & 10th April.
